- Sports drinks like Gatorade or Powerade can be beneficial during intense physical activity due to their added electrolytes, but they are not necessary for sedentary activities.
- Coconut water and lemonade are refreshing options for hydration.
- Liquid IV and DripDrop are popular hydration powders that can be added to water for enhanced hydration.
- Milk and orange juice were found to be effective in a study on hydration.

- Seltzer water and flavored sparkling water can be enjoyable alternatives to plain water.
- Adding a few drops of lemon juice and a pinch of salt to water can enhance its taste and provide some electrolytes.
- Drinking enough water throughout the day is essential for hydration, and water-rich fruits and vegetables also contribute to overall hydration.
Hydration Drinks
Water is the best and most important drink for hydration. However, if you're looking for additional options, there are several drinks that can help with hydration:
- Coconut water: Refreshing and hydrating, coconut water contains natural electrolytes.
- Lemonade: A mix of lemonade and water can be a tasty and hydrating option.
- Sports drinks: Gatorade, Powerade, and similar sports drinks contain electrolytes that can be beneficial during intense physical activity.
- Hydration powders: Products like Liquid IV and DripDrop are popular hydration powders that can be added to water for enhanced hydration.
- Milk: Skim milk and full-fat milk were found to be effective for hydration in a study.
- Orange juice: Another study found that orange juice can be effective for hydration.
Minimizing Hangovers
To minimize hangovers, it's important to stay hydrated while drinking alcohol. Alternating alcoholic beverages with glasses of water can help prevent dehydration. Some people find success with hydration powders like DripDrop or Pedialyte to replenish electrolytes. It's also important to drink in moderation and pace yourself throughout the day or night.
Personal Preferences
Ultimately, personal preferences play a significant role in choosing the best drinks for hydration. Experimenting with different options and finding what works best for your body and taste preferences is key.

What is everyones go to for hydration/re-hydration? My primary is water and gatorade but I think i need something more potent. When I play 2 matches in a day on a 90 degree day it takes me 3-4 days to get rehydrated

Another one for Liquid IV. I’ve tried a bunch of different hydration products and this is really the only one that makes a discernible difference to me.
I live in Central Texas and play out in 100+ degree weather (probably a little too often). Making sure to hydrate a couple of days before playing, drinking one or two of these while playing, and then hydrating after has worked wonders. Instead of being out of commission for a full day or two after playing, I’m feeling pretty great (minus sore muscles ofc) about an hour or two after playing.
Big fan of Liquid IV for sure. But definitely stay hydrated throughout the week.

you can make your own liquid IV that tastes worse but is much cheaper with the juice from one lemon, a bunch of salt, and 4 cups water
it’s obviously not the exact same but hydrates similarly

It definitely shouldn’t take you days to get rehydrated?? I played on tour, and I can recommend some drinks for you if you’re being serious.
But honestly, even after playing in 90 degree heat just chugging a few bottles of water should have you back to normal regarding hydration. Our bodies do an incredible job bouncing back. You’ll be tired unless you’re in great physical shape, but hydration wouldn’t be the issue

tldr; The best for rehydration (not necessarily taste) is Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS). You can buy them on Amazon, or simply make it from salt and sugar you have at home.
Longer response: The World Health Organization (WHO) has been in the business of determining the best formulation for rehydration. Turns out, we can kick many terrible GI illnesses (like cholera), if we can get past the acute dehydration. And when sterile saline and an IV are hard to get to, maximizing the intake of fluid orally is crucial. Thus, through empiric observations and experimentation, the WHO has fallen upon Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) as the optimal way to rehydrate someone through oral intake. ORS is a specific ratio of salt and sugar that enhances the amount of water that can be absorbed through the GI tract.
After longer runs (8+ miles), Ill typically make some of this or use a preformed packet of ORS bought on Amazon. It doesn't taste like Gatorade - a little salty.

Final fun fact: People typically don't get sick during marathon's from not hydrating enough (causing hypernatremia), but typically from overhydrating with water that does not contain enough salt (getting hyponatremia).

1.6g (I think its 1.75 - 0.15, but I may be missing something). Its going to be salty! You might experiment on different days (drinking 500mL vs. 1000 mL vs. 1.5 L, etc.) You can mix in more dilute fluids (gatorade/water) to thirst.

Can a drink actually be “more hydrating” than just water, or is that just made up to sell sports drinks?

Basically title. How can something hydrate you more by adding electrolytes or salt? Surely the amount of water you’re putting into your body is the only measurement of how hydrated you can be? I’m torn between “I don’t know enough about electrolytes to question it” and generally assuming all marketing/advertisem*nt is lies.

Salt, and and other electrolytes like potassium and calcium, are very important factors for hydration because they facilitate the movement of water in and out of cells. They have properties that allow them to bind to water and move it around. This is why, to be properly hydrated, you need electrolytes. The "super advanced" Gatorade electrolytes or whatever are mostly just marketing. However, you will see recommendations to eat a banana or take a shot of pickle juice to help with muscle cramps. This is why.

In addition to this, sugars mixed with water increases water absorption in the intestines. This is why drinks with lots of sugar in them, for like cola, but have no other routining values are actually more hydrating than water.

It’s not necessarily the best drink for hydration, but the sugar makes it good for high intensity activity like sports. That kind of physical drain on the body is pretty much the only time that sugary foods and drinks are helpful instead of excessive when it comes to nutritional value.
This is why trail mix has M&Ms and Cliff Bars are high in sugar as well. Accessible, fast energy replenishment.

As /u/-DarknessFalls- says, it is a real thing. But there is a huge caveat there:
Soldiers, laborers and professional athletes working in the heat get dehydrated. A bit of acid, salt and sugars help the body absorb the water faster, but also replenish the salts you are losing through your sweat.
Famine victims and people suffering from prolonged diarrhea also get dehydrated. The same tactic is used to treat them. In those applications it is called Oral Re-hydration Therapy or ORT.
Now for the caveat: Almost no one else needs to use such products. You are not going to get dehydrated working in an office, or doing a light 1/2 hr work out at the gym. You merely get thirsty. And there is no need for fast replenishment either. Simply drinking water or fruit juices is sufficient to supply the fluids you need. (not anything with caffeine or guarana root in it, those are diuretics, leaving you with less body fluid than you started. )
Short version: They do work, and work exactly as described. But they are treating a condition you probably don't have.

I don't know about more hydrating, but when someone sweats a lot like when playing sports the body loses electrolytes. Same thing for when someone is really sick and throwing up(or has diarrhea). Electrolytes are vital for our body to function, so drinks like Gatorade and pedialyte restore those things. If someone drinks a ton of water without restoring electrolytes, they can literally be "poisoned" by water. So, I guess you could say those drinks are "more hydrating" because they do more than just hydrate a person like water does. They provide the electrolytes lost by exertion or being sick.

It's not exactly bull, but it's not optimal either. It's a compromise between "what you'd actually want for water/salt/sugar replacement during very long exercise" and "what tastes good enough people will buy it just for that." Gatorade has more sugar and lower electrolyte content than "optimal for hydration" would be... but an optimal beverage would be about a third as sweet and three or four times as "salty," and you wouldn't sell nearly as much of it at gas stations.

Low Sugar Drinks for Hydration
Posted by therealrseal · in r/HealthyFood · 1 year ago
One way I need to improve my health is to hydrate better throughout the day. My daily 'liquid' intake is sadly very predictable: 2 cups of coffee in the morning, a sweet tea somewhere around lunch, then another with dinner.
I fully understand the need to hydrate better and the importance of water. The challenge is, I really dislike the taste of water, and as a result, I'm not disciplined enough to drink it as I should - even when I set reminders and keep a glass with me all day.
I don't mind Gatorade or Powerade-type drinks but also understand if those serve as my primary source of hydration that's a lot of sugar. This leads to my next challenge: I dislike the taste of 'sugar alternatives' more than plain water (I'm pretty sure I've tried them all).
I guess what I'm looking for is something like a Gatorade or Powerade w/ maybe half (or less) the sugar content those drinks contain. The best solution I have at the moment is something like semi-sweet tea...

Mix water in with your favorite drinks. Increase the water by 25% every month.
If you could do it all in one go, you'd have done it, so better to take four or five months to make permanent changes than waiting around for your brain to suddenly want something it's never wanted before.
My mother hated the taste of water, and wouldn't drink more than a few cups a day. I freaked out on her many times about it, and she eventually realized that she'd always seen water as a punishment drink. Now she likes it and finally drinks more.
I used to drink AT LEAST 2 liters of Diet co*ke a day. Yes, you read that right. At least. I would occasionally wake up in the middle of the night and have a small glass. I was a true addict.
As I got further into adulthood, I realized that it would cause health issues eventually, and started quitting. Cold turkey didn't work for me either, so I just started forcing myself to buy less, and drink less. It really took me more than a year, but I literally didn't drink ANY soda for years. Now, I can drink soda all I want - which is no more than a few times a month.
If I can do it, you can do it!!

Which electrolytes are most important? Best Sports drink to replenish them?
Posted by RogerFedError · in r/10s · 1 year ago
I live in a hot, humid environment and I sweat buckets. I've recently discovered the importance of having a sports drink with me on the court as it helps a lot to not feel weak and shaky. I usually take a bottle of gatorade with me. I see that this has sodium and potassium, whereas I see other electrolytes drinks like pedialyte sports drinks having these two as well as others like phosphorous, magnesium, chloride.
Do you guys know if gatorade is enough, or if drinks with "more electrolytes" are better? Barking up the wrong tree? Go ask a sports med pro ya dork?

Sports nutritionist here... Though my speciality is more on endurance sports (marathons and cycling).
First, gatorade is essentially a marketing gimmick. Any beverage with enough electrolytes to really help would taste like sh*t. Gatorade has barely any.
Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium, and Calcium are the big ones that you need to constantly replenish. The key is making sure you get those in the right ratio to balance each other.
I really like electrolytes in capsule form, because they're easy to have with you all the time, just swallow them with a bottle of water, and you can measure EXACT dosages (and they are balanced correctly). I really like a product called "Rapid Rehydr8" (Amazon has it)... For endurance athletes, 2 capsules 20 minutes before starting.. and then 2 more every 30 minutes seems to work great for most people. (each "serving" should be taken with 5 to 12oz of water, depending on how much you're sweating).
I would assume tennis players need less than half what a marathoner or cyclist would be using.. But you'll need to experiment. Every person is different. Every sport is different.
It's amazing to be how many experienced athletes I work with who've never REALLY dove into this, and just drink lots of water (or gatorade)....... Once we start working on optimizing their electrolyte intake, their performance AND endurance both go through the roof.

Yup... I take 6oz of water, and one capsule for every two shots (1.5oz of base alcohol) Combine that with a Vitamin B-Complex, and some sort of anti-inflammatory, and you'll never have a hangover again. (Oh, and avoid sugar.. so no mixed drinks, or rum).
I know, I know.. nerd... But yeah, hangovers are a combination of severe dehydration and inflammation... and everyone says "drink lots of water to avoid a hangover", but forget that water is only a PART of the hydration formula. (This is also why people tend to crave salty foods when hung over).

Didn't see anyone mention Cure electrolytes which is my current go-to for training/distance runs. It's easy to mix with just about anything and I don't hate the taste like most other electros

You might check out Skratch or LMNT for electrolyte additives. You can also make your own (LMNT has a recipe on their website).

Dude, soda in general is bad for you. Like, really bad. Even if it says 0 sugars, it's lying to you. The sugar substitute is bad for you in other ways. Overall, you'll live a MUCH healthier life if you just cut out soda entirely from you diet. It's not worth it.

Buddy my glucose monitor stays flatlined after drinking a diet soda on an empty stomach. My insulin is affected zilch. I get being against artificial sweeteners but stating they’re lying about 0 sugars is straight up incorrect.

Best drinks for hydration
Here are a few key considerations:
Water: Water is the best and most natural choice for hydration. It is readily available, calorie-free, and essential for maintaining proper bodily functions.
Electrolyte Drinks: Electrolyte drinks, such as sports drinks or coconut water, can be beneficial for hydration, especially during intense physical activity or in hot weather. They help replenish electrolytes lost through sweat.
Herbal Teas: Certain herbal teas, like chamomile or mint, can contribute to hydration. However, be cautious with caffeinated teas, as caffeine can have a mild diuretic effect.
Fruit Infused Water: Infusing water with fruits like lemon, cucumber, or berries can add flavor and encourage hydration. It's a refreshing option that provides some additional nutrients.
Milk and Plant-Based Milk Alternatives: Milk and plant-based milk alternatives, such as almond or soy milk, can be hydrating options. They contain a good balance of water, electrolytes, and nutrients.
Takeaway: While there are various options for hydration, water remains the best choice for everyday hydration. It's easily accessible, inexpensive, and essential for overall health. Electrolyte drinks can be beneficial during intense physical activity, while herbal teas, fruit-infused water, and milk alternatives can provide hydration with added flavor and nutrients. Remember to listen to your body's thirst cues and drink accordingly.
