Breathable Work Boots Buyer’s Guide

Aren’t all work boots breathable?

Not all work boots are breathable. Instead, only those that are made of breathable material are good for sweaty feet.

Breathability is the ability of a workbook fabric to allow the moisture and perspiration from your sweat to diffuse away from the boot.

Of course, most materials that make work boots, including leather, have a degree of breathability. But, the moisture-wicking ability varies from material to material.

So, even though all work boots would be breathable, their moisture vapor transmission rate would differ.

For instance, the degree of breathability in cotton and wool is far higher than leather or solid polymers. Also, nylon and polyester fabrics tend to draw sweat away from your skin and the surrounding environment.

Therefore, you might sweat more in leather work boots than polyester or polyester.

The breathable mesh lining is the main signature of all breathable work boots. Almost every breathable work boot has got the mesh lining feature.

Some advanced designs have high and breathable fabric that wicks the moisture away and absorbs the sweat from your feet.

But, the design and weaving technique of a work boot can make your feet sweaty. The best breathable work boots have materials that wick away moisture and protect you from any external corrosion.

Here is a table that shows to what degree work boot materials are breathable

What type of material can you find in a breathable work boot?

The materials that make a breathable work boot are the same materials that make their waterproof counterparts work.

The difference is in the construction process. For waterproof boots, these materials are sealed inside of a boot where water can’t penetrate them.

However, for breathable boots, the material is either made as an outer layer or added to improve the breathability of an already existing waterproof boot.

The three main components that go into making your boot breathable include:

  • mesh paneling,
  • perforated leather sections
  • and ventilation holes/grommets.

This allows sweat to escape through evaporation rather than being “trapped” within the boot itself.

When looking for a new pair of boots, many people have the impression that they are breathable. People normally think that leather boots are breathable.

But, boots are not breathable by default.

Difference between breathable and non-breathable work boots?

Non-breathable work boots are made of thicker, tougher material. They keep your feet dryer, but they can get too hot in the summer months.

Breathable work boots allow sweat to evaporate through the holes in the boot’s leather or fabric uppers.

If you’re working in extremely wet conditions, get waterproof non-breathable boots instead.

However, if your job is more on the light-duty side, get breathable work boots that are lighter and easier to walk in for longer periods.

Who needs breathable work boots?

Breathable boots are best for:

  • Workers in construction or other jobs where they’re on their feet all day long and need a breathable, odorless boot to keep their feet fresh throughout the day.
  • Workers who spend hours each day walking around retail stores, museums, zoos – anywhere that requires lots of walking and standing.
  • Workers trying to keep their feet dry and safe from bacterial and viral pathogens that thrive in damp and warm places.

Work boots make you sweat because they don’t let your foot breathe and are designed to keep your feet warm and safe, not dry. The breathable work boots do both!

What happens when you don’t use breathable work boots?

If you’re working in the summer, you certainly need to keep your feet free from sweat. Unfortunately, your skin keeps producing a lot of sweat and faints, which accumulate and risk your feet’ health.

If you don’t wear breathable work boots, your feet may get sweaty, smelly, and sick. High temperatures make your feet skin hard. Cracks often accompany skin hardness and make you scaly.

Then, fungi like hot and moist areas of your feet, and if you don’t have breathable work boots, you could easily end up with other illnesses and fungal infections. Normally, feet infected with fungi have a bad odor. Sweaty feet are itchy too.

Breathable boots eliminate the need to rock and scratch your feet often. Too much scratching can cause chafing and blisters, which can be painful and uncomfortable.

Why are you sweating so much in your work boots?

What makes your feet sweat so much inside your work boots? Pathogens, the environment, and the boots you wear are all to blame for soaking your feet in sweat.

How you wear your work boots

If your boots don’t fit correctly, heat and moisture build-up inside the boot.

The way you lace up your boots and the material they’re made from could be the reason you have sweaty feet!

Properly laced boots reduce moisture build-up by allowing better airflow through them. This will allow any stale air inside the boots to reheat and allow fresh air to enter.

It’s just too hot

The environment could make your feet sweat in your work boots. If you’re going from a cold into a hot place, sweat will accumulate inside the boots.

Even when you go outside, wear your work boots in temperatures above 40° F (4° C), and your feet will sweat like crazy!

If it’s too hot for you to walk around barefoot, it’s too hot to wear your boots unless you are working outdoors.

Wearing smart-wool socks reduces moisture build-up caused by sweaty feet. You’ll want to start with a thin lining, then add thicker wool layers as colder weather sets in!

Carefully cleaned and processed sheep’s wool is effective at managing moisture. The wool wicks away sweat and moisture while still allowing airflow.

Too much friction on the insoles

Packing your feet too tightly in your boots can cause too much friction. And, when your feet and boot rub against each other, you sweat and get a lot of blisters.

If your work boots feel uncomfortable rubbing on either the insoles, try loosening off the laces. Loose laces have plenty of room for your feet to move and this minimizes friction and reduces the pressure you put on your feet.

There’s too much movement in the boots.

If there’s a lot of room inside your work boot, this can also cause your feet to sweat. Loosely laced boots cause too much movement of the feet.

The increased friction between both the insoles and upper parts of your boot causes you to sweat and have blisters. The solution is to purchase perfectly-sized footwear or try wearing thicker socks.

A problem with the material and boot construction

Leather boots are usually known for being fairly hard-wearing. Still, if they’re not treated properly after use, then they can become misshapen and start to squeeze against your foot when put back on again.

Again, this causes an increase in friction and an unpleasant amount of heat.

Then, if the material is not breathable, it traps moisture and soaks your feet in sweat.

Sick feet

One common cause for sweaty feet is hyperhidrosis, also known as excessive sweating.

If you have this condition, your feet won’t be the only part of your body constantly covered in a layer of moisture. But, the resulting sweaty feet can be very uncomfortable nonetheless.

9 Tips to keep your feet from sweating a lot in work boots

Several techniques can help you reduce the amount of moisture being produced from your feet. But, make sure that your feet and footwear are clean and dry.

We recommend changing socks regularly. But, if this doesn’t work for you, try wearing foot powder instead.

Check these tips out:

1. Change to a lighter pair of socks

Wearing thicker, cotton-style socks can help to prevent blisters from forming on your skin. But, they’re not particularly breathable materials which means they trap even more heat than usual.

Try swapping them out for a lighter, synthetic material instead, and the moisture will escape more easily.

2. Foot powder

Do you get breaks within your shift? Or, do you have a changing room? If yes, foot powder is an excellent tip.

Use the chance to get your workboots off your feet. Sprinkle some foot powder on the insoles of both feet and leave them uncovered until they’re completely dry.

When you put them back on afterward, you’ll keep your feet cool all day long without resorting to changing socks every hour or so.7

3. Change footwear

If you work outdoors, the heat from the sun could cause your feet to sweat even more than usual.

Try wearing a pair of boots made from a different material. Or, at the very least, change your socks.

Synthetic material is better than leather when it comes to breathability. So if you own only leather boots, see if you can buy a pair of breathable work boots at least only for summer or hot season.

4. Use talcum powder

This is an age-old trick that’s relatively easy to get hold of and works in the same way as foot powder does.

Sprinkle some on both insoles before you put them back on and allow them to dry completely before stepping out into the heat again

5. Wear Breathable work boots

I know! DUH! 🙂 That’s the main topic of this post. But yes, get a pair of breathable boots with mesh ventilation panels.

It helps draw the moisture away from your feet. They’ll keep the air flowing and, of course, your feet will breathe more easily as well.

6. Change your socks more often

If you wear waterproof boots, then definitely consider changing your socks more than once during a shift.

Having multiple pairs on is another good solution if it’s comfortable enough for you to do so. Socks that are thin enough allow airflow out of the top and bottom of your footwear.

7. Change insoles over time

Old insoles can yield bacteria and fungus. Pathogens in the insole lead to smelly and potentially dangerous foot conditions such as athlete’s foot or, worse: plantar warts.

So, change your insoles after three months of use.

Are Waterproof Work Boots Breathable?

Waterproof boots may be breathable if constructed with the appropriate materials and have an effective waterproofing coated layer.

Waterproof hiking boots, on the other hand, are generally less breathable than non-waterproof boots. That’s because when we talk about ventilation and breathability, we’re not talking about exchanging air; we’re talking about moisture exchange.

When someone asks for a boot to be breathable, they usually want heat and dampness produced by their feet to evaporate naturally, keeping the boot’s interior cool and dry.

Generally, the more breathable your boots are, the less waterproof they are.

This is because it makes the boot very breathable. You must use materials that allow water vapor to pass through them easily.

These same materials are always breathable but not necessarily waterproof. If you’re not sweating enough for this to be an issue, it may not matter which kind of boot you choose.

Most work boots are made of leather and sometimes coated with polyurethane. This cotton material makes the boots waterproof and protects you from moisture.

So, the moisture from the sweat that comes from your feet is trapped inside the boot. And, because the moisture in your boot does it pass through this material, it soaks your feet in sweat.

Remember, the primary reason you buy waterproof work boots is to keep your feet dry. But, without the breathable fabric, they both achieve the exact opposite.

What to look for in a pair of breathable work boots

To choose the best pair of breathable boots, understand the specific features you should be looking for.

The market has several boot options, so knowing the top features to consider when buying work boots helps a lot!

Weight of the boot

The average weight of a pair of breathable work boots is between 2 pounds and 4.5lbs.

If you work in a warehouse or shop that requires extensive walking, lightweight boots will be key to your success on the job.

Boots can make a big difference in how tired your feet and legs feel at the end of a day. So, it’s important to find boots that are as lightweight as possible.

However, the weight of a work boot accrues from the safety and durability features. The leather, metallic and rigid anti-puncture construction all add to the weight of your boot. That’s why the safest work boots are also the heaviest.

Then, the lighter a boot is, the more likely it may not hold up against extensive wear and tear. For this reason, choosing lightweight boots with great construction materials will go a long way.

Construction Material

The type of material used in the boot’s construction can make a big difference in their safety and durability.

Boots that are durable and high-quality can hold up against your extreme work conditions.

If you work outdoors, boots with non-slip soles will help keep you safe on wet or slippery surfaces.

Leather boots may be the preferable option for indoor work over other materials since they will hold up against long-term use and offer more protection.

For a good balance between comfort and durability, synthetic materials may be the best bet.

Break-in Period

If you have had past experiences with boots that have been difficult to break in, it may be a good idea to choose another pair.

Work boots must fit properly, especially around the heel, where they can rub at first.

While it isn’t fun to break in a new pair of boots, you should make sure they are comfortable after these first couple of weeks. You can also try the cobbler’s techniques to break in a stubborn work boot.

Safety features

For added protection, look for boots with safety features such as steel toes or puncture-resistant soles.

Some of these special soles can be slip-resistant too. Steel toes should always be kept clean to prevent injury from the exposed metal pieces inside.

Breathable mesh

If you work in a hot environment, breathable mesh boots can help keep your feet cool and dry.

These boots also tend to be lightweight and low-maintenance.

Waterproofing

For wet environments, waterproof boots with rubber soles are a good choice. Boots should be made from materials that keep water from seeping past the stitching and through seams on the boot.

Durability

The best work boots hold up against the beating you put them through. Go with a solid construction made of quality material that will last for years to come.

Arch support

Boots should be supportive and comfortable, especially if you are spending long days on your feet.

Look for boots that provide arch support or insert options to ensure your feet stay protected all day long.

Odor control technology

For workers who are on their feet all day, appropriate odor control can be a key feature in choosing the right pair of boots.

Some work boots have special moisture-wicking material to combat sweat and bacteria. There are also deodorizing sprays that will keep your boots fresh after use.

The Price

The price of a breathable work boot is usually between $65.00-180.00, depending on the specific brand and whether you are purchasing it online or in person.

When buying breathable work boots, keep in mind the weight- lighter boots are typically more expensive than standard boots.

These lighter boots are also made with less durable leather, making them less expensive than traditional, full-grain leather boots.

What’s The Best Place To Buy Breathable Work Boots?

You can check your local stores, but I believe the best place to buy work boots is online.

The stores grant you access to lots of brands and models from the comfort of your home. Plus the delivery, many times is free.

Here are a few stores you might be familiar with:

  • Amazon
  • Payless
  • Sears
  • Walmart
  • Target

Breathable boots for work: Bottom line

The bottom line is that no work boots is going to keep your feet as cool as if you’d wear flip-flops. You’ll sweat a little in any work boot because, well, you’re working! It’s normal to sweat

But the boots we’ve included in our review are going to help your feet sweat less. In this review, the Keen Utility Lansing is the outright best pair of breathable work boots out there best on what users have said.

Also, the Carhartt model is coming pretty strong behind due to the FAST DRY technology keeps your feet cool and dry by wicking away all moisture. And, you get insulation from heat and electricity too.

Our buying guide has several options of breathable footwear with safe, durable, and waterproof features.

So if you want a breathable boot, you’ll find one in this complete guide.
